Where Is My Tax Refund?

by Tim on February 7, 2012

If you’ve filed your taxes already and you’re expecting a tax return this year, you’re probably asking, “where is my refund?”  Unfortunately, the IRS doesn’t instantaneously wire your tax refund to you, even if you e-filed using the free 2012 Turbo Tax option.  The good news is that if you e-file, you can get your return in as little as 8 days – more on that in a second.

For those of you who e-filed this year, you can check your refund status with this tool from the IRS.  It’s pretty quick and gives you an estimation of when you can expect to see your tax refund.

Of course I know you already realize that getting a refund from the government isn’t the best use of our tax dollars.  It’s a 0% return on your money!  If you’re tired of lending the government your money, make sure you adjust your withholdings with your HR office.  Use this handy IRA withholding calculator to get an idea of what you should have withheld from your paychecks.Refund Status

Be smart with your tax return!

If you’re getting a tax refund this year, put it to good use!  Try to pay down some debt or invest it and make your money work for you.

If you want to use your tax return to start an investment account, you can open an account at Betterment and get a $25 bonus.  You can read our Betterment review here if you want to see how easy it is to get started with investing.

Thanks Tim!

It’s always good advice to never spend your refund before it is in hand. You just never know when IRS will find something they believe to be in error and that refund just goes away …

We’ll be dropping off our tax stuff in the next couple of days, hopefully before the ‘rush’. I’m hoping that this will allow us to get our refund around the early March timeframe.

Yay, I’m gonna head over and check now. :-) I just filed on Sunday and they were accepted on Monday, so according to your handy chart, we should get our money on the 15th. I can’t wait to go blow it all! just kidding.

We are usually in the group of procrastinators who wait until April to file. However, this year we are going to do them early (like within the next week) so that we can get the FASFA finalized for our daughter’s first year in college. Thanks for including the handy chart!

Tim — You packed a lot of great info in this post! It will help many readers, but not me…I don’t get a refund, so I will be filing on about April 15.

Man looking like you got it all covered. I haven’t done my taxes yet but some people I know already got their refunds back. My stated that he received a little from the IRS stating that his refund would be a week or so late due to the high volume in IRS fraud they were having.

I filed mine and my boyfriends taxes on Turbo Tax on 1/27/12 and they were both accepted. Mine came back right away, but I still can’t even get anything to come up for his. Any ideas why this HUGE delay?

I filed around 020812 was to be deposited around 022412 and nothing and now still nothing just says it’s been received and working on it. Is there any way to write and check on the status if it got sent to wrong place or someone else got it. in the past if there was a mistake I would get a note saying so, I’ve head nothing any help would be greatly appreciated.

This chart isn’t worth a crud because I was suppose to have received mine last month and it still hasn’t shown up, so whoever made this chart may want to change it or just delete it all together. The IRS needs to get their crap together and quit giving us false information!
